Do you know the composition of mirror silver? Before answering this question, let’s first explore the basic concept of mirror silver. Also known as electroplated silver or mirror ink, mirror silver is a type of metallic pigment that earns its name from its distinctive glossy finish and exceptional imaging quality. Among these, the non-floating mirror silver produced using a unique vapor-phase metallization process for aluminum pigments stands out. This advanced manufacturing technique leverages the cavitation effect of ultrasound to separate the aluminum film from the PET film, resulting in aluminum flakes of varying sizes with an exceptionally smooth, mirror-like surface. These separated aluminum flakes are then subjected to high-speed cutting and grinding, followed by centrifugation and pressure filtration to form a filter cake. Finally, the cake undergoes kneading and surface treatment to yield the finished product.
The mirror-like silver surface boasts exceptional hiding power and brightness, delivering outstanding mirror effects even with minimal application. Compared to electroplating, it offers significantly lower usage costs, making it a cost-effective alternative. As a result, it is widely used across various industries, including automotive coatings, wheel hub paints, glass coatings, plastic coatings, screen printing, gravure inks, toy paints, and craftwork finishes.
Mirror silver is a classification within aluminum silver paste, and like other aluminum silver pastes, it primarily consists of aluminum powder, solvents, and additives. Notably, mirror silver uses high-purity aluminum as its raw material, with an aluminum content ranging from 10% to 13%. Its average particle size (D50) falls between 5 and 12 micrometers, and the flake thickness is at the nanometer level—making it 5 to 15 times thinner than products made using conventional ball-milling processes. Additionally, the solvents employed are free from harmful substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene-based compounds, making this an environmentally friendly product.
