What are the uses of floating silver? Before we dive into its applications, let’s first understand what floating silver actually is! As far as our editor knows, the primary raw materials for floating silver include aluminum powder, solvent oil, and stearic acid. During the ball-milling stage, a saturated fatty acid like stearic acid is used as a lubricant. This stearic acid adheres to the surface of the aluminum flakes, rendering them hydrophobic and oleophobic in the process.
Regarding the quality of floating silver, we can distinguish it based on its appearance. Typically, we assess the quality by examining differences in particle size—specifically, whether the particles are finer or coarser—and by evaluating the texture of the surface, noting whether it’s smooth or rough. Generally, higher-quality floating silver produces a more even, silvery-white finish with excellent high-gloss chrome-like effects.
Coarse-grained floating silver has low opacity and a relatively rough texture, but it can produce a noticeably shinier finish. Fine-grained floating aluminum silver paste, on the other hand, offers excellent opacity, creating a bright, white effect. These floating-type aluminum silver pastes feature smooth aluminum flakes on their surfaces, which not only reflect light effectively but also provide outstanding thermal insulation performance.
The applications of floating silver are widespread in our daily lives, primarily found in roof coatings with high protection requirements, as well as in maintenance and repair work, anti-corrosion paints, reflective coatings, and coatings designed to mimic the chrome-plated effect.
